		<description>Understanding the Chinese City
Although ambient, cultural forces are
persistent and strong; this research outlines how sinitic civilization diverges
from Indo-European civilization and how that divergence gave rise to
characteristic urban practices. To understand Chinese cities, we must first
understand how Chinese culture stems from its shape-based language, and how it
moralizes and aestheticizes prudence and abundance in distinctive ways.

		<description>Emerging Urban Typologies&#38;nbsp;

Several features in
Chinese culture functioned as "bottlenecks" in the normative process
of urban development across geographical regions, resulting in a typological
drift that produced a range of distinctive urban characteristics, and that may
become new and viable directions in urbanism.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Modern Chinese Historiography
With an enormous and enduring legacy of
recording events, China, according to Liang Qichao, never produced “history”.
This intriguing provocation of a paradox is the focus of this set of papers,
casting light on the complex twentieth-century unfolding of China’s coming to
terms with its own architectural past at a time of violent upheavals. A new
architectural history was born in the process.

		<description>The Chinese Cosmopolitan City

Often perceived as a
cultural singularity, China has a long history of multicultural realities both
from northern and western frontiers (Xiongnu, Xianbei, Qiang, Mongol, Manchu)
and from eastern seashore (Maritime trade); a twelfth-century document, Records of Foreign Peoples (zhufanzhi) lists 158 foreign places all
the way to Tunisia, Libya, Alexandria, southern Spain (Almoravid dynasty), as
well as 247 exotic products. This research aims to articulate a Chinese
cosmopolitanism and an urbanism associated with it. Taking contemporary cities
such as Yiwu and Quangzhou as case studies, we examine how both ancient and
contemporary multicultural urban features differ from those formed by the
pressure of resource extraction and colonization in Europe and America.

		<description>Kowloon Cultural District
As a counter proposal to the cultural
industry of the West Kowloon Cultural District, the proposal of a Kowloon
Cultural District contends that there is already a cultural district in
existence, but in urgent need of intensive care. This research illustrates the
richness of Kowloon urban culture and its capability to function as armatures
for a fulfilling life in Hong Kong.

		<description>Kinesthetic Montage Hong Kong

Kinesthetic Montage Hong Kong&#38;nbsp;explores the unique relationship between film, dense urban space and
movement in Hong Kong through the perspective of the perceiving human body in
motion. The outcomes contribute to a deep understanding of Hong Kong’s spatial
characteristics, and a broadening of approaches in architectural analysis and
design.

		<description>Real Image, Fake Estate

The production,
perception, and evaluation of architecture occurs both in direct as well as in
mediated form. If economic pressures are high, and space is scarce, the image
tends to take over the physical expression of architecture in creating cultural
and economic value.

		<description>The Return of the Literati
If the archetypal persons for the
architect in the West are the hero, the saint, the avant-garde, and the expert,
the archetypal person for the architect in China would be the literati. Part
official, part scholar, part architect, part poet, literati were intellectual
and social actors in gardens, always already considering a myriad of things
(ten thousand things, or wanwu)
through their propensities. What would the architect and architecture look like
in this scene? How could this help us re-calibrate architectural education and
practice so that they work to advance, and not to undermine, the viability of
the planet as a life sustaining system?

		<description>Against Ontology
Ontology is the study of being (ontos), yet, as a Greek intellectual
framework, it imbues Western philosophy with an all-encompassing drive, and
with it, forms of architectural and urban theories. This highly collaborative
investigation, “up-stream”, engages with the renowned thinker François Jullien
and his ideas on how thought and life can become if suspended from ontology, and how
China becomes a total social fact of the non-ontological, moving away from
normative sinology. Among the works, the Theory Culture &#38;amp; Society&#38;nbsp;Special Issue co-edited by Shiqiao
Li and Scott Lash is an ambitious collection of critical
writings engaged in this deep review of Western philosophy.
